Chan Luu is a Vietnamese fashion designer who is now based in the United States of America. After graduating from Boston University in 1975 with a Business Administration degree, Luu made the decision to move to Los Angeles, to pursue her long-held ambition of becoming a fashion designer. Studying at FIDA (the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising), she immersed herself in her studies, and shortly after graduating, she was lucky enough to be able to open her first store, selling designer European women’s fashion.
Although a huge fan of traditional fashion design, it was in accessories where Luu’s passion lay, and it was in 1996 that she began designing and creating her own line of accessories under her own name label. With her trademarks of ethnically artistic design combined with modern lines and contemporary ideas, she is perhaps best known for her wraparound bracelets, distinctly feminine designs that although simple and elegant, have a touch of the luxurious about them due to their semi-precious stones and custom dyed leathers. Luu’s designs are hugely popular amongst celebrities, including Reese Witherspoon, Hilary Duff and Megan Fox.
Chan Luu is not the kind of designer who finds themselves living only in the unrealistic bubble of the fashion world. Luu is a passionate activist and supporter of a number of causes. One of these is the United Nations Ethical Fashion Initiative Agency, which empowers women in developing nations to train in artistic disciplines that can help them carve out a sustainable life for themselves. She is also a huge supporter of the breastcancer.org charity.
Chan Luu’s designs have gone from strength-to-strength over the past few years, and it is very likely this upward trend will continue.
