At only 24 years of age, Tzu Yun Wu is one of the up-and-coming stars in the Asian fashion industry. So far he has presented his own collections for his designer label AUSTINW at New York and Tokyo. Wu was one of many Asian designers that make up incubation project Asia Fashion Collection. His designs have also featured on Taiwan fashion TV show “Super Designer”
Born in Taiwan, Wu studied Costume Design at the Taiwan Shih Chien University, and graduated in 2012. Wu worked at Xin-Yi Eslite department of stationary for two years where he learned a lot about planning exhibitions and managing a brand. While studying Wu also worked with the famous Taiwan designer Jamei Chen.
His designs tend to focus on calm, neutral and cool colours. Wu’s 2011 collection was based on the universal theme of ‘home’, displayed by using warm colours such as yellow and gold. It is through incorporating universal themes and minimalist designs that Wu creates with both Eastern and Western people in mind. Wu cites Korean designer brand R.SHEMISTE as one of his influences.
Speaking to Jing Daily about his work, Wu said: “My ideas are usually expressed in minimalist designs. This style suits both the Eastern and the Western cultures, looks more classic, and reflect current trends.” Wu describes fashion as his whole inner spirit and that through the designing he can understand himself better.
