One of South Korea’s leading fashion designers, Son Jung Wan has annual sales exceeding $60 million.
Son Jung Wan graduated in 1983 from Sookmyung University, and then studied design at International Mode in Seoul. Opening her first self-titled shop in the shadow of the dominant Galleria retailer in 1989, she quietly plied her trade until a year later, impressed with her gutsy and strong designs, she was invited by Galleria to open a shop with them. This was a turning point in Son Jung Wan’s career, winning Seoul Metropolitan’s Designer of the Year award in 2005, and by 2010 she had 37 shops in department stores across Korea, her designs now being available in boutiques and department stores around the globe.
Son Jung Wan’s success has not just been confined to Korea and the Far East. She has exhibited her collections around the world, participating in Paris’ ‘Who’s Next’ in 2006, and showcasing her collections at New York Fashion Week to great acclaim every year since 2011. It’s not just the fashion press who love Son Jung Wan’s designs, her clothing having many celebrity admirers including Kelly Rutherford and Brooke Shields.
2014 sees Son Jung Wan launching an exciting new venture. Despite hailing from one of the most technologically advanced and internet-savvy nations, and having her designs sold all around the world, Son Jung Wan has never sold anything over the internet. This however is changing with the launch of her new website and E-commerce site. “ The internet is such a powerful tool so I wanted to wait until the brand was prepared for this international platform” she said.
This new direction, along with Son Jung Wan’s continually evolving and innovative designs can only see her position as a global designer of significance go from strength-to-strength.
