Jason Wu was a complete unknown to the general public when he exploded onto the world’s stage with Michelle Obama choosing one of his creations to appear at her husband’s Inaugural Ball in January 2009. However, Jason was no overnight sensation, and his success was down to both his talent and his hard work ethic.
Jason was born in Taipei, Taiwan in September 1982 to parents who owned a successful import and export business. It was perhaps his mother’s move to Vancouver when he was 9 that started Jason’s interest in the world of fashion, learning English from his tutor via fashion magazines, and learning to draft patterns and sew by using dolls as mannequins. After completing his senior year at high school in Paris, Wu moved to New York City and enrolled at the famous Parsons School of Design.
Although only in his early thirties, Jason Wu has seen phenomenal success globally. His collections are sold worldwide and some of the most famous and influential women in the world wear his designs, including Christy Turlington, Reese Witherspoon, Diane Kruger and the aforementioned Michelle Obama, who also chose a Jason Wu creation for her husband’s second inauguration.
Jason’s designs combine traditional US sportswear elements with high class elements of chic, and this results in clothing that highlights women’s appreciation of fashion, sense and sensuality, as well as their power, whilst still retaining an overpowering sense of the feminine. These popular designs have led to Jason being the recipient of a number of awards, including the Swarovski Award for Womanswear at the CFDA Awards in 2010, and are testament to not just his talent, but the attention to detail he lavishes upon each and every design.
Most recently, Wu was appointed Art Director of Hugo Boss, artistically overseeing their entire womanswear range.
