Yayoi Kusama is collaborating with Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs, dots flowers and artistic brilliance meets fashion this summer
A Japanese artist from Matusumoto, Nagano Prefecture who is quite simply brilliant at what she does. When Yayoi was a young child she suffered from a mental illness and began hallucinating about dots and flowers which can be seen in her paintings and sculptures today. Her art has always helped her escape the illness and what is to come next will set the fashion industry alight.
She was once a young struggling artist in New York but today Kusama’s conceptual art pairs up with the brilliance of Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs. This is not the first time she has worked with Jacobs, in 2006 she worked with Jacob’s on a line of leather goods, ready-to-wear, accessories, shoes and watches, which were popular in the buoyant Japanese market. This July, Marc Jacobs will be unveiling the new collaboration so expect polka dots to take over your fashion wear this summer.
A limited collection will feature Kusama’s strange landscape of shapes and polka dots in different sizes which will be on Louis Vuitton apparel, accessories, footwear, jewelleries and leather goods. The collection will be bright and bold just like Kusama, shop windows will stand out as Kusama will be designing the installation art herself for it, she wants the windows to accompany the products on the market.
Kusama is a celebrated feminist and now she is the first female Japanese artist to collaborate on a line of products for Louis Vuitton. Jacobs has already collaborated with a number of artists including Richard Prince and the late Stephen Sprouse. This summer marks a history in fashion.
